Musician Molly Tuttle has put her own distinctive bluegrass spin on Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’ – by having her band dress up as characters from Alice in Wonderland as they perform the song! The cover has already caught the attention of over 2.5 million people on YouTube, with many viewers describing the interpretation as “perfect.” “Molly is simply the best thing we’ve got in this crummy existence right now,” said one fan, whilst another said her version was better than the original.

Dressed up as the Queen of Hearts, Molly gave a vocal performance to rival Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick, whilst a banjo player dressed as the Cheshire Cat set the track on fire with a perfectly played solo. A double bass player dressed as the Mad Hatter and a violinist dressed as Alice herself brought the performance alive even further, whilst a white rabbit dancing crazily in the background gave the track a lighthearted edge. Viewers are now crying out for Molly to do more covers in costume!

And whilst it might seem as though Molly and her band are dressing up as a bit of fun, their costume choices are actually incredibly clever given the Alice In Wonderland theme of the song’s lyrics. The track opens with “one pill makes you larger / And one pill makes you small” – a reference to the food and drink Alice has in Wonderland that changes her size, and later mentions a caterpillar, chessmen and the Red Queen, all of whom are characters that feature in Lewis Carroll’s much-loved book.

Aside from this version of ‘White Rabbit’, meanwhile, Molly and her band have also proven many times in the past that they know how to make a cover version work for them. Take the performance they gave of the Rolling Stones’ ‘She’s A Rainbow’ at the Ossipee Valley music festival in 2022, for instance, which puts an entirely new spin on the track, infusing it with a country and bluegrass energy that the crowd clearly loved. It again proves just how talented Molly and her band really are!

Indeed, both of the above videos surely go some way to proving that Molly is blessed with serious levels of musical skill and originality. Many bands have covered ‘White Rabbit’ in the past, but few have chosen to do it while dressed up as characters from Alice in Wonderland, and few artists would be brave enough to turn a classic of the psychedelic era by the Rolling Stones into a blatant bluegrass/country tune. Hats off to you, Molly!
